BOZEMAN AND OPERA
When many people think of Bozeman or the Rocky Mountains, they envision world class skiing, mountain biking, fly fishing, perhaps even cowboy boots. These images would not be wrong but they are incomplete. Bozeman is a center for outdoor recreation and agriculture remains an important part of our economy. But Bozeman is also the home of a nationally known research university, a well-respected medical establishment, and in recent years, has become known as the Silicon Valley of Montana with many large and small high tech businesses located here.

Bozeman is also a center for culture and the arts. Many of Montana’s most famous writers and artists make their homes here. We are also rich in classical music (The Bozeman Symphony Orchestra has doubled its number of concerts over the past decade, the Montana State University Symphony plays to sold out audiences, and a wide array of smaller classical ensembles are centered in Bozeman.) Many of the state’s best known jazz artists also live in Bozeman.
But perhaps the most unexpected cultural amenity Bozeman offers is the Intermountain Opera Association which has been producing grand opera in this grand place for over three decades. Thanks to some lucky coincidences and years of dedicated volunteer efforts (see history page) the IOA brings guest artists who sing in some of the biggest opera companies in the world to Bozeman. They join a chorus and orchestra recruited from among the very best local musicians to share with audiences in Bozeman that most extravagant and emotionally satisfying of the performing arts, live opera.

It is not very often that a town the size of Bozeman is lucky enough to have a cultural asset such as the opera. Take advantage of it! The next time you are in town visiting or coming off of a 3 day backpacking trip on the Continental Divide Trail and you are looking for some culture, make sure you check us out and see what we have on our schedule. You won't be disappointed.
